How to increase confidence and charge more [Issue 014]

I want to show you how raising your rates could be the key to increasing your confidence.

In 2020, I had a day rate of $600. Not a bad rate by any means. You can make $100k by working just 34 of 52 weeks in a year.

I had been at this rate for a few years and had built up plenty confidence that I was "worth" that rate. Then came Project 200k

When I decided to do Project 200k, I unintentionally unlocked something in my brain.

By setting such a large goal, it shifted something in my mind.

  • The question was no longer, “Is my work worth jumping from $600 to $900/day?”

  • The question was now, “How could I charge less than $900 if I am to hit my goal?!”

I flipped the script on confidence.

By increasing my rate and finding clients willing to hire me AND having those clients bring me back project after project, my confidence rose to the level of my rate... rather than the reverse.

Most people subconsciously use the HAVE > DO > BE model.

This looks like...

  • I need to HAVE: Skills and confidence

  • In order to DO: Charge more

  • In order to BE: Successful and happy

I decided to follow the BE > DO > HAVE model.

  • I am choosing to BE: The kind of person who makes $200k

  • In order to DO: Things that $200k freelancers do (one of those things being having a higher day rate)

  • Which will naturally lead to HAVE: Success because it takes care of itself when you embody the identity of who you want to be and do the things you need to do.

So here’s the freelance tip:

  • If your stuck at a low day rate

  • And you don’t have much confidence in yourself

  • Consider the possibility that your low day rate is the cause of your low confidence

  • Consider that if you found someone willing to pay you 25% more for the same or less work, that your confidence would soar through the roof
