3 keys to keep getting hired as a freelancer

In 2012, Neil Gaiman gave an inspiring commencement speech at The University of the Arts. I want to highlight a portion where he describes how to stay booked as a freelancer.

“People keep working in a freelance world (and more and more of today’s world is freelance) because…

  1. Their work is good

  2. They’re easy to work with

  3. They deliver their work on time

And you don’t even need all three… 2 out of 3 is fine.

  • People will tolerate how unpleasant you are if your work is good and you deliver it on time.

  • People will forgive the lateness if your work if it’s good and they like you.

  • And you don’t have to be as good as everyone else if you’re on time and it’s always a pleasure to hear from you.”

The segment I quoted above starts at 14:10, but the whole speech is worth watching.

Of course there are economic forces at play and many other things that can impact your ability to keep getting work, but there is some deep truth in his words.

If you can nail all three (good work, easy to work with, deliver on time), you are setting yourself up to keep getting hired.

Speaking of getting hired… the Junes session of +$25k sold out and we just kicked off the June session of +$25k today. Looking forward to helping these folks build their freelance business, get hired and make an extra $25k.
