Why you don't get better over TIME... you get better over REPS [Issue 41]

You don't get better over TIME... you get better after REPETITIONS.

If you don't put in the reps, time won't help you.

Here are 2 motion design reps you can do

One for design and animation.
One for freelancing.

1️⃣ Time-squeezed animations

  • Give yourself 1-4 hours to make something very simple.

  • Do this once a week for a month or two.

  • And ask for real feedback from people you trust... perhaps your Keyframe Crew.

Repetition + feedback + implement feedback = the fastest way to get better.

If you piddle around with one animation for a year or two, and never get feedback, you're not really putting in the reps. It might be more likely you're shuffling keyframes and not making big decisions.

Go through the whole creation process, including calling it finished... whether you post it publicly or not.

2️⃣ Daily outreach

Every day for a month:

  • Send a DM to a new person

  • Send an email to a potential client

It'll feel awkward at first, but if you wait till you need work, it'll feel forced!

One way to get "feedback" on this is to A/B test the messages you send.

You could send half with a short, casual tone... and the other half with a more formal, thorough tone.

See which one gets more responses. And use the winning style moving forward.

Think of A/B testing your messages as conducting a scientific experiment. You're a motion designer by day and a mad scientist by night. Just don't forget your lab coat and wild hair!

Put in the reps now and see the results sooner.
