The most powerful freelance question ⚡️ [Issue 025]

This week's freelance tip: Ponder this question...

If you could only have one more client and rely on their referral or repeat business, what would you do?

You don't need a perfect answer.

Just ask yourself this question every time you start a new project.

This questions does two things:

  1. It gets you in the best frame of mind to deliver an excellent experience... from communication to final deliverable

  2. It helps you hone in on your processes over time

There are some good ways and some not so good ways to go about trying to make the client as stoked as possible. It's honestly a delicate balance. You want them to be happy, but it can be easy to fall in the trap of thinking that giving them what they ask for will make them happy.

Here are a few good and bad idea examples.

Good ideas:

  • Communicate clearly and timely

  • Set expectations from the beginning

  • Do what you say you're going to do when you say you're going to do it

Bad ideas:

  • Letting the client walk all over you

  • Saying yes to every change request without giving your own creative input

  • Burning out over a low budget project

  • Thinking that if you work really hard at the end and deliver a great product that it will make up for your poor communication throughout the project

Protecting yourself is part of how you are going to deliver the best experience to your clients.

I absolutely love this question and think it's one of the most powerful questions any freelancer can ask themselves.
