Give me a break! [Issue 020]

This week's freelance tip:

TAKE INTENTIONAL BREAKS EVERY QUARTER

What counts:

  • As small as a 3 or 4-day weekend at home

  • Or as big as a multi-week vacation

What doesn't count:

  • Time between projects but you're trying/hoping to get booked

If you haven’t taken a break in a long time, you are probably thinking a couple things… that sounds so nice… and/or I wish I could take a break, but there’s no way!

Intentional breaks are crucial to having your best creative ideas and not burning out.

The problem is us freelancers get scared that if we say no to clients, we might be shutting a door that won't open again.

Let's break down some FEARS and REALITIES...

  • Fear #1: If I say no to my regular client, they will find someone else and I will be replaced

  • Reality: If you are taking an intentional break, you can just tell your client, "I am not available from X to Y date, but I'm more than happy to recommend someone who could help you out."

The client will appreciate you helping them out... putting you in an even higher-value place in their mind.

  • Fear #3: I haven't really thought to take a real break in forever... freelancing is pretty stressful and I guess it feels like if I slow down, things will fall apart.

  • Reality: Taking a true break might lead to your next breakthrough with freelance. You're probably a bit burnt out and a break will do your brain and body some good!

How to make the most of your intentional break

  • Have work lined up afterward (not necessary, but this will calm your freelance brain)

  • Set an out-of-office autoresponder (this relieves you from the need to respond while you're taking a break)

  • Do whatever you want during your break... hobbies, adventure, reading, art, extra time with kids/pets, Netflix, etc.

  • Don't "work"... this is a break FROM work!
