How to take the plunge [Issue 007]
Whether you want to go pro with motion, go freelance, or go to the next level, taking the next step can feel daunting. Or worse… WHAT IS THE NEXT STEP?!
This week’s tip is all about how to take the plunge when you aren’t sure what it is you’re supposed to do anyways.
Here are 3 things to keep in mind when you’re considering taking the next plunge
1: There’s no ONE right path to take
Most people who have success stories to tell, say something like… “I made so many mistakes along the way.”
Successful creatives also rarely start off amazing… they have felt exactly like you… unsure of what to do and feeling down about their progress or skills. But they take action in spite of their fear.
2: Your fear of making mistakes is holding you back
You will not come out of any worthwhile venture unscathed. You’re an adventurer with some rope, a machete, and a tattered old map.
You have a vague idea of what you’re looking for and even less of an idea of how to get it, but you won’t find it by going to the library (aka YouTube) another 20 times. You’re going to have to venture out into the wild, cut down some branches that are in your way, get scratched and cut up, go down the wrong path for a while and re-route when you realize you’re going no where.
Unfortunately, this is the way.
3: A guide can’t take the steps for you
There are lots of people who have done what you want to do. Seek their advice via blogs, social media posts and courses.
It’s great to have a guide… but a guide can’t take the steps for you.
Plus, you’ll never know 100% that the guide is pointing you in the right direction for YOU.
This is not to say you shouldn’t keep learning and seeking guidance. But literally only YOU can make anything happen for yourself.
So… is it time to take the plunge into your next career move?
Probably, maybe.
Here are 3 steps I would suggest to successfully take your next plunge
Step 1: Ask yourself if you are learning as a form of procrastination.
Step 2: Get blunt feedback from someone who is doing something you want to do. Ask if they think you’re ready based on your experience and skill.
Step 3: Go for it… and know that mistakes will be made, most potential clients will say no, some clients won’t be happy with your work, and you will go through the gamut of negative emotions (sad, frustrated, jealous, disappointed, etc.).
